K. Marita Walizer was born and raised in the Kentucky bluegrass region, just like the horses she has loved all her life. Growing up in Louisville, she has watched and can recite every Derby winner since her childhood.
She was mentored by Dr. Lawrence Scanlan, former Churchill Downs top vet. Larry was one of 2 vets chosen by Secretariat's trainer before the Derby to prove his soundness. Walizer was on the far turn fence at Secretariat's Derby, and played games with him on many visits to Claiborne farm. Mae Condon was a dear family friend, and an expert mentor on all things about show horses--to Walizer, William Shatner, and others.
Walizer won the first national artist search to become an official Kentucky Derby artist for the official mint julep bottle served at the Derby. "Derby Cheers" is available as a limited edition print.
