K. Marita Walizer is known as "The Derby Hat Artist" in her beloved hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. She has watched every Kentucky Derby since 1964, and can recite every winner since then. She also knew and played with Secretariat and saw many famous champions. In 2011, she became an official Kentucky Derby artist, when she won the first Grand Prize national contest to have her painting "Derby Cheers" pictured on every official mint julep bottle served at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby. She is an excellent judge of horses, mentored by track vet Dr. Lawrence Scanlan, and Mae Condon, ASHA.
